Everything about Oddernes totally explained
Oddernes is a former municipality in
Vest-Agder county, Norway. The name stems from its location by the
Otra river.
The municipality was created as Oddernes
formannskapsdistrikt in
1837. According to the 1835 census the municipality had a population of 2,373. Oddernes encircled the city
Kristiansand, and encompassed villages such as
Flekkerøy,
Vågsbygd,
Slettheia,
Lund,
Strai,
Mosby,
Justvik and
Ålefjær.
On
31 December 1893 the area
Randesund was separated from Oddernes to contstitute a municipality of its own. The split left Oddernes with 3,076 inhabitants. On
1 July 1921 the area Lund with 2,164 inhabitants was moved from Oddernes to Kristiansand, constituting a new borough.
On
1 January 1965 the rest of Oddernes was incorporated into Kristiansand, along with Randesund and
Tveit. Prior to the merger Oddernes had a population of 18,668.
